About Dr. Gina
Dr. Gina Sissoko is a licensed clinical psychologist, researcher, and global consultant whose work examines how colorism, gendered racism, and beauty hierarchies shape mental health and identity development — with a core focus on Black women and girls. Her work offers insights that resonate across Black and Brown communities worldwide, supporting organizations and communities in fostering confidence, belonging, and wellbeing.
As a consultant, Dr. Sissoko partners with beauty and wellness brands, schools, universities, and community organizations to translate psychology into culturally grounded programs, trainings, and campaigns. Her work helps institutions understand the psychological impact of colorism and representation and create content and initiatives that are culturally resonant and aligned with community wellbeing.
By integrating mental health and identity insights into brand storytelling, organizational strategy, and community engagement, she supports institutions in strengthening authenticity, deepening trust, and building environments where Black and Brown communities feel seen, valued, and supported.
She is known for transforming rigorous research into practical insights that resonate across diverse audiences, including brand partners, creatives, educators, clinicians, and organizational leaders.
Dr. Sissoko maintains a highly active program of research and has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals. She has secured over $370,000 in grant funding for her scholarship, which spans the United States, Germany, and several African contexts.
Her work uses mixed-methods approaches to understand how appearance-based stress, representation, and sociocultural norms shape developmental trajectories across the lifespan. She is regularly invited to present her work internationally and is recognized as an emerging global expert on colorism and representation.
In addition to her consulting work, Dr. Sissoko is a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Public Health and an adjunct professor in the City University of New York system, where she teaches and mentors emerging scholars. Her broader body of work includes research on mental health, gendered racism, immigrant experiences, and culturally responsive care.
She has presented her work across North America, Europe, and Africa, with a commitment to making psychological science accessible and relevant to communities around the world.
Across all of her roles, Dr. Sissoko is guided by a simple mission: to help Black and Brown women and girls — and the communities that support them — feel seen, understood, and empowered. Through research, teaching, speaking, and consulting, she works to create spaces where identity is affirmed, resilience is nurtured, and mental health can truly flourish.
